ROYAL LIFE SAVING GREY MEDALLION

One-third of all drownings in Australia are people aged over 55 About 60 people aged 55 or more die by accidental drowning each year in Australia, according to a new study on aquatic-related injuries announced by the Australian Government Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot.  “A further 534 older people, on average, are admitted to hospital each year for injuries that occur while they are involved in aquatic activities, including boating and fishing.” Mrs Elliot said.

The Royal Life Saving Society is launching the Grey Medallion program which is a water safety and lifesaving skills program for the over 55’s. The program endeavours to teach participants a range of personal survival techniques, provide them with skills to deal with an emergency situation and to develop confidence and competence to enjoy aquatic exercise and other water based activity safely.

There are four main components of the program:

·         Water Safety Knowledge
·         Resuscitation and Emergency Care
·         Aquatic Exercise
·         Personal Survival and Lifesaving Skills

Swimming or aquatic exercise can be a relaxing and pleasant form of activity for many older people, improving their mobility, flexibility and muscle strength. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of heart attack, improve blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure and is a key means of preventing accidental falls which are a major problem for older Australians. With the increasing number of young children being looked after by their grandparents while mum and dad are at work or during the school holidays it is important to understand the risks associated with swimming at the beach or pool and being able to deal with an emergency should it arise. The Grey Medallion program will be provided at swimming pools throughout Tasmania and is scheduled to start mid January 2009. For more information including venues and course dates please contact Royal Life Saving Tasmania on 03 6243 7558 or visit www.tas.royallifesaving.com.au
